If you want an informal, fun meal at Alexander House Hotel, you go to Reflections. You can go there in your robe and slippers at lunchtime, but at dinner time it’s best to dress up a little if you want to fit in.

I went with my partner Owl for an a la carte dinner. We sat in the lounge bar beforehand having a glass of Champagne with some crisps, nuts and olives, and then they made the effort to find out our names and come and give us a menu to peruse before going through to the Reflections restaurant.

In the restaurant itself, we enjoyed breadsticks and brown and white bread with cheese and chive butter and a bottle of white Italian Litorale wine. Our starters were asparagus with duck eggs cocotte and cheese brioche soldiers, and tuna tartare with caviar and quail eggs, which was particularly good.

My main of spatchcock chicken with triple cooked chips, mushroom, red onion and watercress was good, but there was only a token amount of watercress and although this dish was meant to come with a sauce, none was offered or provided. The staff were also slow to bring the water we asked for and we could have done with a proper meat knife for the mains. My partner owl had the duck breast with confit potatoes, pickled shittake mushrooms, spring onion and soya reduction.

For dessert we shared the chocolate ‘devil’s food’ cake with candied peanuts and peanut butter ice cream, and with our green teas we were given a tasty piece of fudge. However, when we got the bill we queried what the item ‘devil is a woman’ was on the bill and were told this referred to the tea – Googling shows that this is the name of a certain brand of green tea.

Reflections is a good choice if you want a solid, tasty meal after lounging around in the spa.
