When I visited: December 2007
Rating in the Michelin Guide: Not rated in the Guide
What to wear: Could go casual
Ambience: Casual, friendly, fun
Course of the meal: Red velvet cake
If I could change one thing: Come to London (although I like the essential New York-ness of this place)
Kitchenette will always conjure up memories of New York in the winter for me, as I visited twice in a week of constantly swirling snow and sub-zero temperatures. It is a cosy, friendly chain of high-quality cafés serving sumptuous hot chocolates and cakes as well as substantial savoury meals. I went there once when I had had to go to hospital after an accident and the atmosphere and indulgent food did a lot to make me feel better, and provided a laugh when, upon asking my partner Owl to get us a slice of cake each, he returned with one to share as the red velvet cake was literally the size of my head.
I’d love to go back to Kitchenette next time I’m in NYC … for now I will make do with my commemorative mug, pictured.
